What Does the Bible Teach? Angels and Demons What Does the Bible Teach?

Angels and Demons Why This Study? It is a Bible topic We must avoid extremes: total disbelief (Ac. 23:8), or worship of angels and demons (Col. 2:18) We must understand how angels and demons affect our lives today – both are interested in us today (Lk. 15:7,10; Eph. 6:12)

Angels and Demons Their Origin “Angel” whether the Heb. (malak) or the Gr. (angellos) means “messenger” Created by God (Neh. 9:6; Psa. 148:2-5; Jn. 1:3; Col. 1:15-17) The specific time of their creation is not indicated (Job 38:6-7)

Angels and Demons Their Origin “Demon” from the Gr. daimon means “knowing ones” Created as good angels by God (Gen. 1:31) Fell from their proper place (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6) The time of their fall is not specified (Gen. 3:1; note Lk. 10:18; Rev.12:9; cf. Isa. 14:12 is not a ref. to Satan) Pride (1 Tim. 3:6) or rebellion (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6) may have been the cause of their fall (compare 2 Pet. 2:11; Jude 9)

Angels and Demons Their Identification Angels (Mt. 26:53), archangel (1 Thess. 4:16; Jude 6) [two named: Gabriel and Michael] Cherubim (Gen. 3:24; 2 K. 19:15; Ezek. 10:12), seraphim (Isa. 6:2,6) Living creatures (Rev. 4:6-9; 6:1ff; 14:3; 15:7) Holy ones (Dan. 4:13,17,23; 8:13; Psa. 89:6-7) Sons of God (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7) Hosts (Lk. 2:13) Thrones, powers, rulers, authorities (Col. 1:16)
