Distinct in My Influence January 31

Think About it … List some spices which you use often to enhance your cooking Which of these do you think is the most important? Today  We will look at what Jesus says about how the Christian is to be “salt” to the world … and how we can – be an influence and on the people around us and – influence our culture in general

Listen for what Jesus says about salt. Matthew 5:13 (NIV) "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

Influence Like Salt What are some of the characteristics, qualities, or uses of salt? What are some ways we can spread “saltiness” around to preserve, heal, cause spiritual thirst? What are some issues prevalent in today’s society in which the preservative nature of Christian faith is desperately needed?

Influence Like Salt We might wonder about how salt “loses its saltiness” … – Sodium chloride will always taste salty. – The problem was not the absence of the salt but the mixture with chemical impurities In what ways do believers today lose their value to society by becoming mixed with “impurities?”

Influence Like Light What is the effect of bright light in a dark place? Listen for how not to use a light.

Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Influence Like Light According to Jesus, how exactly are Christians to be like lamps? In what ways is our world, our culture, our society a dark place that needs light? What kind of behavior should other people see Christians exhibiting?

Influence Like Light How might a believer hide his or her light? If believers live as they are supposed to live, how will others respond toward God? Who has been a “light of the world” in your life – who has demonstrated that kind of Spirit filled influence through good works?  Thank God for this person

Listen for Jesus’ comments on the Law. Matthew 5:17-20 (NIV) "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these

Listen for Jesus’ comments on the Law. commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Influence Through Obedience What facts does Jesus establish about the Law? What does He say that demonstrates how important God considers the Law? Jesus said He came to fulfill the Law. How do we see that demonstrated in His life and teachings?

Influence Through Obedience Jesus said that the one who practices and teaches God’s command will be considered great in God’s Kingdom. Not all of us hold an official position of teacher. In what ways do we have the role or responsibility of teaching? Scribes and Pharisees were known for outward righteousness, but their walk and talk did not always agree. What steps do you take to insure the kind of righteousness that honors God?

Application Pray – Think of someone in your circle of acquaintances who needs the influence of Christian salt and light in their lives – Pray for that person each day this week, asking God to prepare their heart for a spiritual influence you might provide

Application Meet – By the end of this week, take the first step in using your spiritual salt and light – When you meet with this person, be quick to listen, slow to speak – Trust God to guide your thoughts, words, and actions

Application Lead – Identify a missions opportunity in your church in which God is leading you to participate – Promote this opportunity among your small group – Invite them to prayerfully consider joining you
