RECAP What is primary healthcare? Write down as many examples as you can. What was a ‘community health partnership?’

What am I learning today? Examples of secondary (acute) healthcare Case Study: The Southern General Hospital Care in the Community

Examples of Secondary Care Secondary Health Care is that which a patient receives when they have been referred to a hospital for specialist treatment. These services include: appointments with consultants, nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists and other specialists. emergency treatment following accidents. surgery and short-term care patients with worrying health symptoms. people attending hospitals can do so through outpatient clinics or health centres.

ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY One of the problems faced by A&E units has been that people with minor injuries have been dealt with by the same service as those dealing with serious emergencies. This can lead to long waiting times for people with minor injuries if someone with serious injuries arrives. The Solution: Two new A&E trauma centres will only deal with seriously ill Inpatient hospitals- admitted directly to wards Minor injury units

Describe, in detail, primary and secondary health care services provided by the NHS in Scotland. (8)

Primary health care services • GP practices – doctors/nurses/midwives/physiotherapists • Primary Care Teams • local health care co-operatives • community health care programmes • dental practitioners/opticians/pharmacists Secondary health care services • acute hospital trusts • hospital care – treatment, surgery, etc.
