Welcome to Behavioral Science! Aaron Grossman

What you will learn Before the midterm –Introduction to Health Care in America and your future relationships with patients –Development from birth to death –Basic experimentation and perception Before the final –Biological bases of mental function (learning/memory, conditioning, decision making) –Some psychiatry –Human sexuality and neuropsychology –Neurobiology of stress & sleep, and brain plasticity

Spring Training … Taught in spring for 1 st time Paired with Neuroscience Lectures can complement each other… –"Perception" and "Visual System” –"Sleep and EEG" and "Reticular System” –"Substance Abuse" and "Neurochemistry“ –"Neuropsych / Brain Plasticity" and "Cerebral Cortex“ We want your feedback !!

Behavioral Science is broad Behavioral Science will cover biology, social psychology, psychiatry, & cognition –also a number of other things Don’t be overly concerned by the broad number of topics –Think “How does this relate to treating a patient?” –This will help you better remember the material too! Team-taught course

Why is this important? Okay, you’ve got 8 other classes –You’ll have to interact with patients –You’ll have to treat them from birth to death –You’ll have to read medical journals –You’ll have to take a sexual history –You’ll have to know how the brain performs higher cognitive functions…

What’s expected? Come to class –Not a requirement -- a darned good idea Review the handouts –All material on the exam is in your handouts –Much is also covered in the textbook Pass the exams with a 60% or better –“O” typically is 90 or better.

The textbook Fadem, Barbara. (2005). Board Review Series: Behavioral Science. (4 th edition) –Buy it now. You’ll be glad you have it. (Available at TIS or on amazon.com) –Has VERY good practice questions in it …

How to find your lectures Go to the M1 page at Click on Behavioral Science Pick “Schedule” from blue menu on left Find lecture you want, look to far right for “PPT” or “PDF” link “Save target as…” or click to open in new window “Will they be there the night before??”

Lecture notes TA reviews Late-breaking announcements Practice questions Contact info for professors Online resources to help with difficult material Other interesting bits of information

Questions? Textbooks on reserve in library TA office hours TBA –These will be listed under “Announcements,” and may have to be flexible… me at your professors Don’t forget the exam reviews!
