Introduction Project Statement: The Bangarang Musical Engineering Group has been tasked with developing a new and innovative musical instrument, which incorporates multiple traditional tones/notes sources. Basic Project Requirements: Should be able to be played manually or in an automated fashion Should be able to be played manually or in an automated fashion Project design should be feasible and marketable Project design should be feasible and marketable A prototype of the instrument must be built within the $400 budget. A prototype of the instrument must be built within the $400 budget.

Initial Product Design Concepts Pat’s “Tone generator” By taking a tether or wings with different configurations of holes and attaching it to a DC motor, we would be able to generate a variety of different sounds. By taking a tether or wings with different configurations of holes and attaching it to a DC motor, we would be able to generate a variety of different sounds.

Design Concepts Cont. Matt’s “Air Piano” Using a glove (s), pressure taps and a microcontroller, a person could generate musical notes by simply moving fingers Using a glove (s), pressure taps and a microcontroller, a person could generate musical notes by simply moving fingers Leading concept design after initial review Leading concept design after initial review

Status of Design Concept The primary target market : disabled and handicapped The primary target market : disabled and handicapped - potentially marketable as a toy Use Matt’s concept but generate a real sound rather than an electronic tone, like in Pat’s design. Last Week’s Action Items Establish lines of communication with contacts Establish lines of communication with contacts Investigate basic instrument types and sounds Investigate basic instrument types and sounds Research methods of driving the mechanism to operate instrument Research methods of driving the mechanism to operate instrument - pneumatics, motors, solenoid motor (linear motion control), and torsional spring apparatus

This Week’s Action Items Finalize instrument type and sound generating method Finalize instrument type and sound generating method Produce trade study proposals Produce trade study proposals - group due date 9/12 Decide on electronics to be used for design Decide on electronics to be used for design - PLC (programmable logic controller) versus microcontroller - glove versus pad
