They disrupt feelings, moods, and the ability to relate to daily occurrences.  Mental conditions are a result of a diminished capacity to cope with the challenges and demands of every day life in a healthy manner.

 Mental Illnesses affect all races, ages, religion, and economic status.  Not a result of weakness, lack of character or a result of being raised improperly.  They are treatable!!!

 57.7 million Americans are diagnosed with a mental disorder  10% of adolescents suffer from emotional and mental disorders.  10 leading causes of disability in the US are mental disorders.  young and older individuals are more susceptible.  Economic cost of untreated mental illness is over 100 billion.  70-90% of those who get treated experience a significant reduction in symptoms

 Anxiety Disorders : OCD, PTSD, and Panic Disorder.  Mood disorders: Mania, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder.  Impulse Control Disorders: Pyromania, kleptomania.  Eating Disorder: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa.  Personality disorder: Social Phobia.  Psychotic Disorders: Schizophrenia.

 Misconception that a person with a mental illness is crazy.  Stigma causes people to believe that Mental Illnesses are not real health problems.  It is something one can control, its all in your head, and it will go away.  You can fix the problem without help.  Embarrassed to acknowledge problem.

 Disorders will get worse if not treated properly  Some are a result of change in body chemistry and cannot be controlled.  Speak to a trusted adult  Can only fix the problem if you admit there is one  Mental disorders cannot be “willed away”

 Parent or family member  Mental Health Professional  School Nurse  Priest, Minister, Rabbi or other Clergy Member  Teacher or School Counselor  Hot line
