SAMI MAKERSPACE MAKE: AN ELECTRONICS WORKSHOP

SAFETY

YOU KNOW WHAT’S FUNNY ABOUT SAFETY? THERE IS NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT SAFETY! PHYSICAL and EMOTIONAL safety. This is an inclusive space where EVERYONE is welcome. You decide your intent, but you do not control your effect. Measure twice, cut once. Focus. Think it through. Error on the side of caution.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Safety glasses. Fire extinguisher. Gloves. Ventilation.

KNOWLEDGE IS THE BEST PROTECTION Do the training, get the experience, earn your credentials.

DO. MAKE. BREAK. AND LEARN EVERY SECOND OF THE WAY!

Take control. Don’t sit around and wait for something to happen. Take initiative and make it happen yourself! DO. MAKE. BREAK.

Do what? Make something. Make anything. It doesn’t have to be perfect on the first try. The process is more important than product, especially at the beginning. DO. MAKE. BREAK.

After you make it, push your creation to the limit and find out how to make it better. DO. MAKE. BREAK.

FAIL FAST. FAIL OFTEN. THE ITERATIVE DESIGN PROCESS

AN ENTREPRENEUR DISCUSSES THEIR FAILURES: “The very first company I started failed with a great bang. The second one failed a little bit less, but still failed. The third on, you know, proper failed, but it was kind of okay. I recovered quickly. Number four almost didn’t fail. It still didn’t really feel great, but it did okay. Number five was PayPal.” -Max Levchin, PayPal Co-Founder Net worth: $300 Million

FAIL FAST. FAIL OFTEN. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying. If you do nothing, you’re guaranteed that nothing will happen. Making mistakes is better than procrastinating or getting caught-up in picky details.

NUTS AND BOLTS IMPORTANT PROCEDURES TO KNOW.

ATTENDANCE There are two work sessions each day: 8:45 – 11:00 and 11:45 - 2:45. Check in at PORTABLE 12 at or before the begging of each work session.

LOCATIONS After checking in portable 12 at the start of each work session, you can choose to work in portable 12, portable 13, or the boardwalk between the two. You may not work at the picnic tables, on the stairs, or on the wheelchair ramp. Power tools (solder, drills, glue guns) stay in portable 12. All lectures and accreditations will be in portable 13.

BREAK TIME You have 10 minutes of break time that you can use during the day. You indicate that you are on break by moving your name card (you do not need to ask for permission) You can take two five minute breaks during the day, or one 10 minute break. If you are late for either work session, time will be deducted from your break time in 5 minute increments. You can’t use your break time during the first or last 10 minutes of a work session. Using the restroom, playing games, texting/making phone calls, and getting a soda from the vending machine are all considered “breaks” and you must use your break time.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE To work together, you must respect the organization of the space! Do not take a whole box to your table; take the item you need and leave the box on the shelf. Return your materials to the correct box as soon as you are done with it. Do not hoard materials. Share!

GRADE 70% Application of Engineering and Design Process Students are able to tackle the large challenge of creating a robot by breaking it down into series of smaller, more easily completed tasks. Student are able define the criteria of a successful final product. Students are able to identify constraints of their final product. Absences, tardiness, and off task behavior allow for fewer opportunities for students to demonstrate these standards, and will therefore effect their grades. 30% Products A robot that navigates the course successfully. Daily progress reports. Proper use and safe return of makerspace resources (safety glasses, Arduinos, etc). Need to create this. Possible components: Each group member must write what they accomplished and assess their efforts on BAME scale. Group members also assess each other on the BAME scale. Next steps/work for tomorrow.

STORING A PROJECT You can keep a project here in the classroom if: It takes up less than a cubic foot. It is stored on the bottom row of shelves (labeled PROJECT PARKING) Your parked projects have an approved “PARKING PERMIT” that is less than two weeks old.
