English III Ms. Alison Reiner and Mr. Jonathan Silberlight

Literature Junior year focuses on American Lit. The novels your child will read include: –To Kill a Mockingbird –The Crucible –The Scarlet Letter –The Great Gatsby –The Old Man and the Sea –Shakespeare for junior level: Macbeth

Vocabulary The vocabulary for this grade and level will be drawn from the novels we read. Activities will focus on creating meaningful ways for students to remember and use the new terms, instead of simply memorizing.

Grammar Grammar skills will be practiced throughout the year also. –Writing assignments –Do now activities –Out of context grammar lessons as needed

Writing Descriptive and Narrative Writing practiced by writing in journals and in relation to literature. Persuasive Writing practiced in HSPA review and also in relation to literature. Expository Writing practiced by performing research and composing College Research Paper.

Policies to be aware of: Research paper will count as 50% of marking period grade when completed. Plagarism in any written work results in a zero. It will be checked by teacher and a database called turnitin.com. Three missing homework assignments or three tardies to class result in contacting home and a detention.

Expectations: Always be prepared for class. You will need your tools to complete your work. (Notebook, novel, pens, etc.) Take pride in your work. Complete all assignments on time. Consult teacher with questions and/or concerns.

HSPA A major focus during the junior year is preparation for the High School Proficiency Test (HSPA). Goal is for all students to pass with a proficient to advanced proficient score. Skills tested in HSPA will be practiced and reviewed throughout the course in various ways. Never in isolation, always embedded in the unit we are studying.

Contact Information: - Please fell free to me with any questions or concerns. I say because it is the most reliable way to contact me.

Thank you for coming tonight! Please check the assignments and grades on teacher ease frequently if you are concerned. Hope to see you at the parent/teacher conferences in November.
