Monday, Nov 16 Lesson 5.3 Compare and Order Integers

Objective: To understand how to compare and order integers.

Integers The number line can be used to compare and order integers. On a number line, the number to the left is always less than the number to the right.

Integers An inequality is an expression that shows two values are not equal. A “greater than” or “less than” sign shows an inequality. e.g. 6 > 3

Integers Write -9 and -4 as an inequality.

Integers Write -9 and -4 as an inequality < -4 Generally you want to keep the integers in the same order as in the question.

Integers Write -5 and 0 as an inequality.

Integers Write -5 and 0 as an inequality < 0

Integers Replace with to make the statement true

Integers Replace with to make the statement true Since -6 is to the left of 5 it is less than < 5

Integers Replace with to make the statement true

Integers Replace with to make the statement true Since -1 is to the left of 0 it is less than < 0

Integers Justin has a score of -4 on the Trueville Trivia game. Desiree’s score is -5. Write an inequality to compare the scores. Who has the higher score?

Integers Justin has a score of -4 on the Trueville Trivia game. Desiree’s score is -5. Write an inequality to compare the scores. Who has the higher score? -4 > is further to the right than -5, so Justin has the higher score.

Integers The temperature on Tuesday was 2˚F. The temperature on Wednesday was -2˚F. Write and inequality to compare the temperatures. Explain the meaning of the inequality.

Integers The temperature on Tuesday was 2˚F. The temperature on Wednesday was -2˚F. Write and inequality to compare the temperatures. Explain the meaning of the inequality. 2 > -2 2 is further to the right than -2, so Tuesday’s temperature was higher.

Integers Order 4, 8, 0, -5 from least to greatest Do this on your own. (use your number line)

Integers Order 4, 8, 0, -5 from least to greatest

Integers Order 4, 8, 0, -5 from least to greatest Is least to greatest right to left or left to right?

Integers Order 4, 8, 0, -5 from least to greatest ,0,4,8

Integers Order 1, -3.5, 4, -1.5 from least to greatest

Integers Order 1, -3.5, 4, -1.5 from least to greatest -3.5, -1.5, 1, 4

Compare and Order Integers The table shows the lowest elevation for several continents. Order the elevations from least to greatest. Do this on your own.

Compare and Order Integers The table shows the lowest elevation for several continents. Order the elevations from least to greatest. -418, -156, -105, -86, -28, -12

Compare and Order Integers The elevation of Driskill Mountain, LA is 163 meters above sea level. Death Valley has an elevation of -86 meters. Write an inequality to compare the elevations. Explain the meaning of the inequality. Do this on your own.

Compare and Order Integers The elevation of Driskill Mountain, LA is 163 meters above sea level. Death Valley has an elevation of -86 meters. Write an inequality to compare the elevations. Explain the meaning of the inequality. 163 > -86 Driskill Mountain has a higher elevation than Death Valley.

Compare and Order Integers Yvonne owes her sister $25. Michael’s checking account balance is - $20. Write an inequality to compare the amounts. Explain the meaning of the inequality.

Compare and Order Integers Yvonne owes her sister $25. Michael’s checking account balance is - $20. Write an inequality to compare the amounts. Explain the meaning of the inequality. -25 < -20 Yvonne owes more money than Michael.

Compare and Order Integers Marissa and her family are on a ski trip at Mt. Washington. They return from the slopes at 6PM. By 9PM the temperature had fallen 18˚ to the day’s low temperature of -8˚F. What was the temperature at 6PM? What are the facts?

Compare and Order Integers The table shows the amount of time it takes Henry to do different activities before going to soccer practice. If he needs to be at practice at 8:15AM, what time should he wake up in the morning? Or you could have added the times in the table, = 80 minutes Then figure out what time is 80 minutes before 8: minutes is 1 hour and 2o minutes. An hour before 8:15AM is 7: minutes before that is 6:55AM
