World of work How do tasks bring the world of work into the classroom? Tool WC-2: Using tasks that make connections to the world of work

Overview Aims:  To develop a critical appreciation of tasks that connect learning to the world of work  To explore the possible impact on learning when using these with a class We will: Discuss key features in pairs Share reflections as a group Prepare to use a task with a class

Learning through tasks that connect to the world of work There are five tasks to discuss. In pairs you will be directed to start with different tasks but should aim to discuss all five tasks within the 20 minutes allocated.

Questions for paired discussions For each task you might consider: Does the task require students to adopt a role or ways of working that are different to usual? What knowledge, skills, or understanding might be gained, either mathematical or science-related or otherwise, through using this task? In what ways might this learning be different from that stimulated by a more conventional school task? Would the task help motivate students or stimulate student inquiry in any way?

Comparing the tasks As a group, you may want to briefly share the main points from your discussions but also try to make comparisons between tasks. Are there any differences in the actual learning that might take place when used with a class?

Finishing off Select one of these five tasks that you might use with a class, with or without any adaptation. Try using this with a class and observe how students respond. After the lesson: Reflect on the student learning stimulated by the task Be ready to report back to the group at a later date
