ESTABLISHMENT OF CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR HOUSING STUDIES (COE) KNUST This Centre came into being through the efforts of some KEY PARTNERSHIPS: The Nigeria UK Housing Society (NUHS) the founding organisation which led to the creation of AHPAN Africa Housing Professional Association, Nigeria (AHPAN) African Development Bank (ADB) the Grant Trustee Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA) an anchor for ADB

ESTABLISHMENT OF CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR HOUSING STUDIES (COE) KNUST It was designed to engage universities in 5 African countries; Nigeria and Ghana being the pilot Kenya, Uganda and South Africa Each of these countries will have a Chapter of AHPAN, AHPAG, AHPAU etc. A total amount of $90, was given to KNUST to set up the infrastructure for the centre

WHO IS THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF HOUSING (CIH) The CIH is the formal Professional Accreditation body which oversees professional practice in the UK Done through a programme of training and education in partnership with universities, colleges and private training providers. It is the largest awarding body for recognised housing qualifications in the UK.

CIH The CIH is experienced in working with countries outside the UK to develop and accredit housing qualifications which lead to CIH membership. It is currently working with 21,000 members, mostly in the UK It also Oversees various organisations in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada and Australia, Ghana and Nigeria.

CIH TODAY CIH with its head office in Coventry, West Midlands, is rendering services to members in addition to: Producing training Publications Conferences and Seminars to organisations, members and non-members CIH works with universities to develop housing qualifications, and Provides distance learning courses

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF CIH, UK There are 5 stages to CIH Chartered membership: STAGE 1 CIH assesses qualifications of all candidates to determine eligibility to enable qualified candidate move to the second stage of the direct final;

DIRECT FINAL ENTRY PROCESSES TO CIHCM Stages 2 To assess and justify candidates meeting the learning outcomes within their personal statement, they will have to follow the West African specification for membership. They will all have to go through the following;

DIRECT FINAL ENTRY PROCESSES TO CIHCM Personal Statement Synopsis Requirements: (Each will submit a 500 word synopsis ) To have a broad understanding of affordable housing issues and policy in the context of Ghana and that they understand broader issues of housing. Candidate Interviewing: Questions will in 4 questions areas within 45minutes to 1 hour Each candidates will have 12minutes to present their synopsis either as PowerPoint or paper presentation

DIRECT FINAL ENTRY PROCESSES TO CIHCM Stage 3 Interviews Candidates will be expected to answer questions in their chosen topic of housing issues Stage 4 Decisions Provision of a general feedback of decisions in the form of written confirmation of successes and failures

DIRECT FINAL ENTRY PROCESSES TO CIHC Stage 5 Professional Membership For each member to attain the professional corporate members, they will have to pay annual membership fees There are various i.e. Chartered Member rate: £44/264ghcs or Certificate Member rate: £23/138ghcs renewable every year

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR HOUSING STUDIES, KNUST  What is the Centre of Excellence (CoE) about ?  It’s being set up to enable and facilitate advance research into the all facets of housing, especially “the housing Mix” :  Policies, legal framework, construction, finance, management, etc. in the sub region and Africa at large.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE Objectives of the Programme;  To promote the science and art of housing, its standards and ideals, and  The training and educating of those engaged in the profession of housing practice.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE  It also prepares students for membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing in the UK and or that of the Ghana Institute of Housing

GRADUATE COURSES  The two main courses are ;  MSc (Housing Studies) and  M Phil ( Housing studies)  These two have been accredited by the Chartered Institute for Housing, UK (CIH) and National Accreditation Board (NAB)  Other accredited short courses would be offered by the Ghana Institute of Housing (GIH)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Entry Qualification:  Holders of Bachelor degrees from recognized universities  with a minimum of 2 years working experience in recognised institutions whose work and professional activities relate to the proposed programme.  Other professionals with the requisite experience in housing and housing related areas are also eligible to apply.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS  As a requirement for admission, applicants shortlisted for admissions would be required to attend an interview.  Candidates from the following backgrounds would be given priority;

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES  Employable by international agencies that are housing inclined such as;  Habitat for Humanity,  Slum Dwellers International and Cities Alliance.  Nationally, the services of the products will be needed in the Ministry of Works and Housing and Water Resources,  Social Security and National Insurance Trust,

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES  Tema Development Company,  Ministry of Local Government and Rural  Development: Metropolitan,  Municipal and District Assemblies;  NGOs; and the private sector in general

COLLABORATION WITH LONDON SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY (LSBU) The CoE and GIH are both currently in discussions with the LSBU to work out mutual support for delivering housing education in KNUST LSBU will be meeting us to discuss the following possibilities; Exploring potential franchise on LSBU/KNUST for undergraduate and Graduate housing programmes
