Immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe Most immigrants to the US, between 1840 and 1870 come from Great Britain, Ireland, and Germany After the 1880’s many immigrants were from countries such as Poland, Greece, Italy, and Russia. Many people settled in Midwest cities such as Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit, others settled in New York. The newcomers were alike in many ways: Religion was mostly Catholic, Jewish, or Orthodox Did not speak English they were used to working in different conditions than the US. Most entered US through New York City
