ADDING & SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS Compare 1/2 and 2/3 We can compare these two fractions by sketching arrays. An ARRAY is a rectangle or a square that has a length and a width. or

Compare 1/2 and 2/3 The dimensions of your array will ALWAYS be the denominators of the fractions. ½ and 2/3 What are the dimensions of the array? 2 by 3 or 2 x 3 (2 down and 3 across)

Create a 2 by 3 array to represent 1/2 Create a 2 by 3 array to represent 2/3 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/2 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/2 What is the area? What is the perimeter? 6 10 In this situation, what is 1/2 equivalent to? What is 2/3 equivalent to? 3/6 4/6

Since 1/2 is equivalent to 3/6, and 2/3 is equivalent to 4/6, which fraction is greater? 2/3 > 1/2 1/2 =3/6 2/3 = 4/6 These are called “proportions”

Add 1/2 and 2/3 by sketching area model arrays Subtract 2/3 and 1/2 by sketching area model arrays

Add 1/2 and 1/4 by sketching area model arrays Subtract 1/2 and 1/4 by sketching area model arrays

Assignment Add or Subtract these fractions by sketching area model arrays: 1.1/2 + 1/3(Determine the area and perimeter) 2.1/2 - 1/3 3.2/3 + 3/4(Determine the area and perimeter) 4.3/4 - 2/3 5.3/4 + 1/3 6.3/4 – 1/3 Due tomorrow!

Assignment 9/5/07(continued) Add or Subtract these fractions by sketching area model arrays: 1.1/2 + 3/4 (Determine the area and perimeter also) 2.1/6 + 1/2 (Determine the area and perimeter also) 3.1/2 - 1/4 4.1/2 – 1/6 5. 2/3 + 1/2 (Determine the area and perimeter also) 6.2/5 + 1/2 (Determine the area and perimeter also) 7.1/2 – 2/5 8.1/3 – 1/4 (Determine the area and perimeter also) 9.5/6 + 1/2 10.5/6 – 1/2 Due tomorrow!
