HIMAWARI 8 BRIEF COPC FALL 2015 November 5, 2015 version 1.1

Himawari Data Exploitation at FNMOC Himawari is being ingested at FNMOC (5 legacy MTSAT channels only) with data supplied by 557 th WW via MARKIVB Data is utilized with in FNMOC TCWEB page Data has been augmented to the FNMOC Satellite Focus (sat_focus) web page. Atmospheric Motion Vectors are also being received from JMA via GTS and assimilated in FNMOC NAVDAS-AR for use in NWP global model NAVGEM Himawari data is being ingested from NRLMRY via NOAA STAR (all 16 channels) and bent piped to FNMOC for data exploitation use

Himawari-8 Data Usage at NAVO  We began pulling the HSD format Himawari-8 data from STAR in late May. Matt Jochum was very accommodating in setting up access to these data for us.  Our initial intention was to use NetCDF data from H8 for our processes, but due to the very large difference in file sizes between the HSD and NetCDF formats we've decided to use HSD for our ingest and operations.  We are currently working on ingesting the H8 HSD data into our MCSST process. This is in the early stages, so no significant progress reports on this at present.  Plan to have a provisional SST product ready by second quarter FY2016.

NCEP Input: – From the Japanese Meteorological Agency – JMA will replace operationally supported MTSAT-2 with Himawari-8 on December 4. At that time H-8 will become the official source of full disk satellite imagery over the Western Pacific, Alaska, and Hawaii Received from: – Data acquired by NESDIS STAR and retrieved by the NCO/IDP processing – Data arrives in “slabs” or rows 8

NCEP cont. Products include: – 16 Spectral Bands × 76 Tiles per 10 minute observation scan – Tiles are in netCDF4 for use in AWIPS – Pacific Region (110° E - 120° W) x (30° S - 45° N): – Alaska Region (110° E - 120° W) x (45° N - 75° N): – NHC/OPC/AWC/WPC: Tiles 1-76 NCEP Center Requirements: – MTSAT-2 is currently supported operationally via NSOF – Himawari-8 is the replacement for MTSAT-2 – NCEP Centers such as AWC, OPC, and WPC will rely on 10-minute H-8 data operationally to produce their forecasts. – NESDIS STAR provides support only on a Monday-Friday / 8-5 basis. In the event of an outage, Centers would only have a handful of polar-orbiting satellites as a backup. In areas such as Alaska and the North Pacific, polar orbiting satellites provide a few pass per day, but no where near the temporal cadence as H-8. – NCO will be supporting H-8 operationally from a dataflow / processing perspective once it arrives from NESDIS STAR 9

NWS Use of Himawari 10

Initial Himawari Support within NOAA Initial data delivery and processing development within NOAA is being funded with Sandy Supplemental –comes with a number of congressionally-monitored caveats for use of these funds (see notes). Initial capabilities include: –Full resolution radiance data and AMVs (BUFR) to EMC and JCSDA –Full resolution imagery to Alaska Region, Pacific Region, NCEP centers –AMVs, Cloud Mask, Cloud Height, Cloud Type (modification of GOES-R algorithms) –HimawariCast at Guam, Hawaii and Alaska 11

Himawari Data Flow (Pre-PDA) 12

Himawari Data Flow within NWS Himawaricast Data – Full Disk (FD) − Compatible with current MTSAT HRIT services − FD every 10 minutes, format = HRIT (after de-encapulation at receiver) − FD partitioned into 10 file segments − 5 Channels while MTSAT operational, 1kim, 4 4km) – then − 14 Channels (1 km VIS, + all other Channels at 4km except 0.43 Blue and 0.51 Green which will not be rebroadcast)  Point A, Himawari Full Resolution – Full Disk (FD) –Himawari scans north to south –FD every 10 minutes, format = HSD –FD partitioned into 10 file segments, –16 Channels: Band #Spatial Resolution# Pixels East-West North-South , 2, –

NWS Himwaricast Status (from GRP Project Manager) NWS Plans for 3 Permanent Himawaricast Systems –WFO Guam –Pacific Region Headquarters (IRC/Honolulu) –Anchorage (Sand Lake Facility), AK System Definition/Development Reviews Completed by Development Contractor –Requirements Review (Nov 2014) –Design Review (January 2015) Guam and Hawaii Site Surveys Completed (Feb 2015) Downstream/External Interface Definition Updated (e.g. to include netCDF4, May 2015) Site Acceptance Tests for Guam and Hawaii (Sep/Oct 2015) Site Acceptance Test for Alaska (2016, date TBD) 14

Summary & Discussion NESDIS and NWS working on a number of levels to get ready for Himawari Operations NOAA readiness dependent on a number of related projects coming together –NESDIS project to retrieve full-resolution data from JMA cloud and process –NWS project to assimilate this data into weather models –NWS project to disseminate full resolution data to users –NWS project to build 3 Himawaricast antenna systems covering Pacific Basin –Test support at both NESDIS and NWS –NWS AWIPS2 development –NWS Forecaster Training 15

Degradation or Cancellation of NESDIS Products with MTSAT-2 (140E) Data Coverage Product(s) or Data Impacted: NESDIS Pacific Region legacy products employing MTSAT-2 data Date/Time of Initial Impact: December 2015, specific date to be determined Date/Time of Expected End: Permanent Details/Specifics of Impact: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) plans to replace MTSAT-2 (140E) with its new series of 16 channel satellites, Himawari-8 (H-8) on July 7, To assist users in the transition to the new satellite, JMA will operate MTSAT-2 in parallel with H-8 until November NESDIS plans to provide current MTSAT products to their users until November Due to resource constraints, NESDIS does not have any current plans to use Himawari-8 data to produce Pacific Region legacy products to fill-in the coverage gap left by the loss of MTSAT-2 data. Specifically, as a result of the data loss, the identified Pacific Region legacy products or global blended products in the table below will be cancelled or degraded after November 2015.
