LIMITATIONS OF CROWDSOURCING & SOCIAL MOBILIZATION Three distinct problems identified by the Tag Challenge: Mobilizing participants: without the right incentives, it’s harder to get people to move. Aggregating information: you have to be able to collect & store all of the data Verifying information: are you receiving reliable and accurate information? Factors that may affect time-critical social mobilization: Without highly connected people with distant friends, your message might not spread. Without rapid response times, your message might not spread in time.

SOME DISADVANTAGES OF CROWDSOURCING 1.No Confidentiality Soliciting suggestions makes your plans of your company or product public 2.Stolen or recycled names Contestants in crowdsourcing competitions have been known to deliberately submit ideas they copied, plagiarized or submitted in other competitions 3.Derailment “When NASA asked the public to help name a new room to be added to future American space stations, comedian Stephen Colbert asked his fans to suggest it be called "Colbert." And indeed they did, in droves, so that he received 40,000 more votes than the runner-up name. The U.S. space agency was not amused” 4.Hidden Costs Culling through 50,000 submissions takes vastly more time than considering the top 5, 10 or 25 suggestions offered by a professional naming company
