Utilizing SAS to Create Diagnostic Reading Assessments Evelyn Wassel, Ed.D. Tri-Valley School District October 11, 2010

What is SAS? The Pennsylvania Standards Aligned System (SAS) is a collaborative product of research and good practice that identifies six distinct elements which, if utilized together, will provide schools and districts a common framework for continuous school and district enhancement and improvement.

What is SAS?

Diagnostic Assessments Ascertains, prior to instruction, each student’s –Strengths –Weaknesses –Knowledge –Skills –Establishing these permits the instructor to remediate students adjust the curriculum to meet pupils’ unique needs.

DRAs Developmental Reading Assessment. Teachers in grades K-2 assess students using a DRA several times during the course of the school year. A DRA consists of a child reading an unseen text on his/her independent reading level.

Running Records Running records are similar to DRAs and are given on a formative basis to inform instruction. Running records may be on a seen or unseen text.

DRA & Running Records The DRA and running record assess for: –oral reading (ability to call the words on the page) –fluency (speed & expression or intonation) –retelling/comprehension (ability to share or retell the story to a friend who has never seen/heard/read the text).

GRADE Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation diagnostic reading test that determines what developmental skills students Pre-K through 12th grade have mastered and where they need instruction or intervention. helps educators with the recommended instruction through correlated follow-up materials. group-administered norm-referenced

GMADE Group Math Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation

Classroom Diagnostic Tools Set of online tests designed to provide diagnostic information in order to guide instruction and remediation. Will be offered in grades 6 through high school and will be available for use in schools and classrooms throughout the school year. Based on content covered by the Keystone Exams and the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment and includes an interactive and dynamic reporting suite. Will be fully integrated in the Standards Aligned System (SAS).

Designing Assessments in SAS Clear Standards  4 th Grade  RWSL Eligible Content – choose a section that has “Assessments” button on right. R4.A.1.1.1: Identify and/or interpret meaning of multiple-meaning words used in text. –7 results R4.A.1.1.2: Identify and/or interpret a synonym or antonym of a word used in text. –Same 7 results
