Presentation transcript:

Many of the tools and methods used for programming have been discussed and shared in previous modules. Tracking by the trainee is key. This is one of the key methods for us to be able to help them. Please familiarize yourself with the tracking forms and information gathering forms we use in the Wellness Center. Training cards Trainee questionnaire Rehab Questionnaire Members training cards are kept in the two separate filing cabinets, one for female and males, and alphabetized. Clip boards and pencils are kept near the cabinet for members while they are on the exercise floor. BP Wellness Center Program Administration

Here on the BP campus, we deal with a pretty average cross section of society. We have members ranging in age from 17 (interns) to 80+ (retirees). We have worked with thousands of folks with various health conditions and musculoskeletal problems. Many of these issues are first brought up and addressed in the new member fitness assessment. Bottom line: If you ever encounter a member condition or health situation you are uncertain of the course of action— stop and contact your Wellness Staff supervisor before proceeding. No guessing here—use the brains we have on staff here to help you. We are working as a team here to help our members. If an emergency situation arises, you will follow the processes laid out in the Risk/Incident management modules. BP Wellness Center Special Populations

We work with a number of members with various injuries, conditions and surgeries. We have come to use a variety of simple methods to help members with their recovery from minor musculoskeletal injury and a variety of major surgeries. You will have a chance to practice and demonstrate: Flexibility assessments Self myofascial release Trigger Point Therapy Functional Movement Screens Therapeutic Exercise Icing and wrapping NOVA 7 Award submittal Nova 7 nomination package Health Promotion Practitioner Article BP Wellness Center Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

We are not physicians, physical therapists or chiropractors. Be sure the members you work with understand that. Fortunately we do not need to be any of the above to help people. The methods we use are designed to be easy to implement and very low risk. If you want to learn more about rehab, members of the staff will assist you in learning about the methods we use. Do not ever offer advice if you are not sure—seek help from a member of the team. Likewise, if you have a skill or experience that will help our staff and program—please share it! That goes for everything! BP Wellness Center Rehabilitation Cont’d

One of the most important aspects of helping others with injuries is: Knowing when you are over your head. If you are stumped—refer the member to another professional (physician, physical therapist, etc). If whatever you gave them to do hasn’t worked after 2 weeks—refer the member to another professional. If someone needs to be seen by a doctor—urge them strongly to do so. Don’t give into their request for exercises or moves to relieve symptoms especially when serious injury is suspected. We do not want to be barriers to appropriate care. Fortunately most problems we see are very minor. BP Wellness Center Know When to Refer Out
