Buddhist Vocabulary

Buddhism Religion that began in India around the 400’s BC. It is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Guatama - or Buddha. Its main teachings are to want less and to always take a “middle path”.

4 Noble Truths 4 basic statements that Buddhists believe: 1.) Life is suffering. 2.) The cause of suffering is want. 3.) Once you have realized that you want nothing, the suffering can be stopped. 4.) Following the 8 Fold Path will help stop the suffering.

8 Fold Path These are the main 8 teachings for Buddhists. They believe that if these 8 teachings are followed- your soul will reach Nirvana. 1.) Right View 2.) Right Thought 3.) Right Speech 4.) Right Action 5.) Right Livelihood 6.) Right Effort 7.) Right Mindfulness 8.) Right Concentration

Enlightenment/Nirvana State of mind when you have relieved your soul of all suffering and you are at peace. Buddha believed that all people were capable of this and that this was every person’s ultimate goal- he felt that the 8 Fold Path was the best way to get there.
