Presentation transcript:

PLRB’s Search Database There are three main search methods: 1. Search (home page) 2. Subject, Text, State (coverage research page) 3. Table of Contents (coverage research page)

1. Search

Refining your search: Question: What if you want to refine your search to a more specific factual or state specific coverage issue?

2. Subject, Text, State search...

3. Table of Contents search...

3. Table of Contents search - To expand Table of Contents, click on sign to the left of the relevant text. - Continue doing this to drill-down to subfolders containing relevant coverage documents

3. Table of Contents search State-by-State Materials: - are documents regarding common coverage issues broken down by state-specific law.

3. Table of Contents search Accessing State-by-State materials: - click on sign to the left of State-by-State folder.

3. Table of Contents search State-by-State Materials include:  Actual Cash Value  Adjuster Licensing Statutes  Anti-concurrent Causation Preface (is it enforced or is proximate cause analysis used?)  Appraisal (what is the scope, what are its requirements?)  Collapse (how is it defined?)  Common Law Marriage (is it valid?)  Condo Statutes  Earth Movement Exclusion (must it be natural and catastrophic?)  Ensuing / Resulting Loss (is it broadly or narrowly interpreted?)  Innocent Coinsured  Ordinance or Law Exclusion (when is it enforced?)  Proximate Cause (how is it determined?)  Proof of Loss (how long do insured/insurer have to file/respond?)  Residency Compendium  Settling / Wear and Tear Exclusion (is it limited to non-fortuitous losses?)  Suit Limitations  Unfair Claims Practices Acts  Valued Policies  Water Damage Exclusion (does natural source rule apply?)

Tips for better searching Use * as a term expander after search term(s) when using either Search or Subject,Text, State search options. - For example, a search for rodent* will look for documents containing rodent or rodents. - Also, a search for pollut* will look for documents containing pollution, pollutants, etc.

Tips for better searching Searching For Phrases: “ ” To search for a particular phrase, simply put it in quotes. For example, by typing “wear and tear” or “surface water” the computer will look for the words together as a phrase.

Tips for better searching Chart A quick way to retrieve most of PLRB’s state-by-state materials is to type the word chart in the Subject field.

Tips for better searching And & Or To look at the search terms as alternatives to each other, type an “or” between those terms. For example, a search for skunk OR rodent will pull up documents containing either term or both terms. (You don’t have to put “and” or “or” in all caps.) You can put several terms in the same search field. By typing “and” or just leaving a blank space between your search terms, your search will retrieve only documents containing all of the typed terms. For example, a search for skunk AND Rodent will only pull up documents containing BOTH terms.

Tips for better searching Hurricane Information Page To quickly access PLRB’s current hurricane information in one place, see its Hurricane Information Page. This page can be accessed via PLRB’s homepage, under Property Legal Updates located in the white center of the screen. The Hurricane Information Page contains our latest bulletins on related coverage issues, regulations, orders, statutes and case law.

Tips for better searching Can’t Find the Info You Want? “Ask Coverage Question” If you cannot locate the information you need in our database: - click on the yellow “Coverage Research” tab on the PLRB homepage, -then click on “Ask Coverage Question” on the yellow bar across the top of the screen. - You may then submit a coverage question to one of our coverage attorneys. If you need to speak with a coverage attorney, call: (for PLRB) or (for LIRB).
