Presentation transcript:

Objective: Students will identify the characteristics of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Bellwork: What are your needs?

 We’ve identify “Who are you” now it’s time to look at our next unit “What do you want”  Deciding what you want is not an easy task? In addition, it’s constantly changing.  People want happiness, peace, and life satisfaction… but what gives them these feelings varies greatly.

“You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes you just might find You just might find You get what you need” ~Mick Jagger & Keith Richards

 Think of it as a ladder.  You cannot jump over a run or two. You must take each step to reach the top… and you can slip down the rungs.  Only about 10% of all people actually reach the top level of self-actualization.  Self-actualization means you have done what you set out to accomplish and reached your goals.  Life satisfaction is a process!

Physiological Needs: When I was at this level, I wanted to fulfill my basic biological needs such as food. I didn’t want anything but a morsel of food. In fact, if I had nothing to eat, I would have eaten stale dry bread thrown away by someone, without a whimper

Once my tummy was full, I began to look for a cozy and safe place to live in. I then maneuvered a human called Cameo by giving him oh-so-innocent- oh-so-helpless look, and convinced him to adopt me.

Next I wanted to feel a part of their family. So I refused to sleep on the rug in the corner of the bedroom. I manipulated Cameo into giving me a place on the bed! I also refused to eat alone… I ensured that we ate together.. As families should. I also fell in love.

After I became a part of the family and after I got them in an emotional bind, I began to demand respect. I wanted my own box, rug, chew- toys, quilt, bowls, and a new ball every week. I began experiencing a desire to be better off than the dog next door.

Eventually, when I was done with chewing my own toys and stretching on my own rug; I wanted to do something more! I even decided to save a cat.

Survival – Do you have enough food and water to survive? – Do you have a place to live? – Do you have enough clothes to keep you warm? Security and Safety – Do you feel safe? – Do you feel secure? Sense of Belonging – Do you feel you belong somewhere? – Do you feel loved? Self-Esteem – Do you feel good about yourself? – Do you feel worthwhile or valuable as a human being? Self-Actualization – Do you feel accomplished? – Do you feel mature? – Do you trust your judgment? – Do you feel in control of your life?
