Arms Race Each side built up its supply of missiles and atomic bombs. Stalin dies, 1953, and is replaced by Nikita Khrushchev Soviets launch Sputnik (worlds first satellite) U.S. creates National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958.

Bay of Pigs Invasion 1959, Fidel Castro sets up communist gov’t in Cuba Many Cuban exiles flee to the U.S. Exiles are trained in U.S. for secret invasion on Cuba. 1961, John F. Kennedy becomes President  April 17 exiles land at Bay of Pigs. Castro’s forces quickly rounded up invaders and the invasion is a failure.
