Situational Irony Situational irony occurs when there is a sharp contrast between what you expect in a given situation and what actually happens.

Verbal Irony Verbal irony occurs when what is said is intentionally different than what is meant.

Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony takes place when the audience knows something a character does not.

Examples At your tables, discuss and write down an example for each type of irony.

Number your paper 1-5 For each of the following, choose the letter that best explains why the example is ironic.

a. Trees are for birds and there is an airplane in this one. b. There is a sign reading: “Learn to fly here!” and the person flying the plane made a significant error in flying. c. It’s weird for a crash to happen so low to the ground.

a. You would expect a fitness center to promote physical activity and to avoid conveniences like an escalator. b. After a work out, it’s expected that you are too tired to take the stairs. c. You expect to find an escalator at a shopping mall and people who go to fitness centers don’t also go to the mall. c.

a. The man in the picture is holding a sign that says, “Go USA” but the sign is white with black lettering; you would expect it to be red, white, and blue. b. The man in the picture looks like a foreigner, yet he is holding a “GO USA” sign. c. The man in the picture is holding a sign that says, “Get a BRAIN MORANS” and ‘morons’ is spelled incorrectly. You wouldn’t expect this error from someone who is telling other people to be smarter.

a. You wouldn’t expect a thin woman to be holding two bags of fast food in a commercial. Usually they have heavier people in fast food ads. b. There is a woman doctor featured in the PSA about ‘childhood obesity.’ People are more likely to trust a male doctor. c. You wouldn’t expect a PSA about childhood obesity to be featured on top of a fast food commercial which features cheap French fries, soda, and a burger.

a. You expect cartoons to be funny and not violent. b. The man in the cartoon was shot with an arrow in a store full of guns. c. Arrows are primitive forms of weaponry, and no one would rob a gun store with an arrow.
