The Next Step in K-12 Arts Learning Standards for Students in the 21 st Century

Eight national organizations representing arts education professionals from the education, policy, and government sectors State Education Agency for Directors of Art Education (SEADAE) consists of those persons at state education agencies whose responsibility is K-12 public education in the arts. The College Board is a dynamic, member-led, mission-driven organization working to ensure that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to succeed in college and beyond. American Alliance for Theater and Education connects and inspires a growing collective of theatre artists, educators, and scholars committed to transforming young people and communities through theatre arts. Arts Education Partnership focuses on assisting every student to reach high levels of achievement and competence in the arts and in the other subjects and skills essential to their success in school, life and work. Educational Theater Association is a professional organization for theatre educators that supports efforts to have theatre arts education (including film, television, and other related media) recognized in all phases of education and lifelong learning. National Association for Music Education is among the world's largest arts education organizations and is the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. National Art Education Association advances visual arts education to fulfill human potential and promote global understanding. National Dance Education Organization is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of high quality education in the art of dance.

Coalition Goal Update the 1994 Standards for Arts Education (adopted by 49 states) to reflect the 21 st Century needs of students, teachers, parents, and administrators.

Approach - Overview

Revised Arts Standards will include Best practices based on College Board research studies. Content, skills and processes in the four main arts disciplines of dance, music, theater, and visual arts as well as development of media arts standards. Achievement measures to help assess student growth and teacher effectiveness. Use of samples of student work as a means of calibrating achievement levels based on actual student outcomes. Expanded grade levels that will align with early learning standards and college readiness strategies. Analysis of necessary supporting structures to help guide policy and budgetary decisions. Web-based platform that allows for student portfolios, teacher practice, and assessment processes and also allows for revisions and updates.
