Matter Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Matter is made up of microscopic atoms. An atom is the smallest particle of an element.
Properties of Matter A property is a characteristic of something that you can observe. Color Texture Shape Size Hardness Smell Temperature Magnetic Attraction Ability to dissolve in liquid Buoyancy
Mass Mass is the amount of matter making up an object Measured in grams (small mass) & kilograms (large mass) 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram Tool: Balance Scale
Solid Has a definite shape & takes up a definite amount of space. Particles are packed in with not a lot of room to move. Examples: desk, smart board, trees
Liquid Does not have a definite shape Takes the shape of its container Takes up a definite amount of space Examples: water, ocean, orange juice
Gas The particles move about freely. They have the most space. Does not have a definite shape and does not take up a definite amount of space. Examples: helium, oxygen & steam
