WARM UP: 1. Consider how you felt about your ability to write DBQs at the beginning of the year. Compare that to how you feel now. 2. What is your greatest strength in writing (or DBQ writing)? Why? 3. What is your biggest shortcoming in writing (or DBQ writing)? Why?

Let’s get exCITEd in here Citations, DBQs, and You

Citation Nation In case you haven’t noticed: – DBQ’s NEED TO INCLUDE THE DOCUMENTS! This can be accomplished in a few ways. – Today we will talk about and practice some of these strategies.

The Original Document Document 1 This excerpt is from the monastic vows of Brother Gerald. “I hereby renounce my parents, my brothers and relatives, my friends, my possessions..and the vain and empty glory and pleasure of this world. I also renounce my own will, for the will of God. I accept all the hardships of the monastic life, and take the vows of purity, chastity, and poverty, in the hope of heaven; and I promise to remain a monk in this monastery all the days of my life.”

Strategy 1: The Quote Directly quote the document EXAMPLE: – “Document 1 brings up the sacrifice of being a member of the Church, saying: “I hereby renounce my parents, my brothers and relatives, my friends, my possessions…for the will of God.”” [ ] STRATEGY: reduce the length of a quote to cut down to ONLY WHAT YOU NEED by adding three periods (…) to replace unneeded information.

Strategy 2: The Reference Reference the Document by name and describe what is meant in the document. PorEjemplo: – “Document 1 mentions the sacrifice clergy would make when they joined the church by describing what Brother Gerald gave up when he became a friar.”

Strategy 3: The Citation Identify the Document after describing it in parenthesis, without using its name in your writing. Per Exemple: – “Monks were required to give up many things when joining the church, resigning to live their life for God (Document 1).” This is the strongest strategy to use and makes your writing more academic! (College-Level work!!)

BUT! WAIT! It’s not enough to JUST mention the Documents! MUST RELATE THE DOCUMENTS TO THE PROMPT!!!! – Do not simply just “Drop a reference” or write down a random quote. Weak. – DO reference the document somehow and then make a strong connection.

PEER EXAMPLES The writing of your peers will help you see where strengths and weaknesses lie. These are your peers’ essays, so BE RESPECTFUL. There will be no tolerance for disrespect. Do not identify yourself as the writer of the essay We need to focus on several items to become excellent writers.

EXAMPLE: “A quote from Erasmus states, “The world is waking out of a long deep sleep” The reason why the spread of humanism helped contribute to the decline of the Catholic Church because people started to become interested in themselves.” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?

EXAMPLE: “In document 2 says that time was when learning was found in the religious order nowadays care only for the money and sensuality while learning has to many secular places and peers and courtier” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?

EXAMPLE: “Document 3 is a pair of sketches from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook, this best shows humanism because he is drawing about himself, the individual, and not the church, the group.” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?

EXAMPLE: “In Document 2 it says that ignorance is still defended there was a time when only learning was found in religious orders. Not thinking about what any other individual wanted.” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?

EXAMPLE: “For example in Document 2 it states “the religious order nowadays care only for money and sensuality [indulgence of the appetites], while learning has passed to many secular princes and peers and courtiers.” This shows that the author (A.J. Froude) was trying to show that the church was mainly focusing on money and not about the people.” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?

EXAMPLE: “Also “the religious orders nowadays care only for the money and sensuality.” The church wanted money (something a lot of people didn’t have).” Focused on prompt? Explained? Content correct? Worded correctly?
