Meiosis Or reduction division.. What is the Difference between Mitosis and Meiosis.
Chapter 4.3.  Gametes:  Reproductive cells. They contain half the usual number of chromosomes.  Egg:  Gamete that is formed by the female.  Sperm:
Mitosis vs. Meiosis. What is the difference Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not produce a new organism. Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not.
Meiosis Cell division process whereby the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell is reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes.
Aim: How does sexual reproduction occur?. Look at the end result and what’s inside!!
Mitosis & Meiosis. Mitosis Asexual Cellular Reproduction Asexual Cellular Reproduction.
Asexual Reproduction vs. Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction – Diploid cells give rise to identical diploid cells – DNA comes from one parent cell.
 IPMATPMAT Meiosis includes Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, and Telophase II.
Meiosis: Creation of the Sex Cells. What is Meiosis?? Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Occurs.
Mitosis/Meiosis How are they different?. The exchange of DNA between the chromatid arms on homologous pairs is called ________________ Crossing over This.
Do Now 2.7 Objectives: 1. Define crossing over 2.Describe the process of meiosis and the cells it produces. 3.Define the Law of Independent Assortment.

Meiosis Unit 4-3 Notes Mr. Hefti - Biology

1. Definition Cell division that occurs only in gonads producing gametes. –Spermatogenesis - in testes / results in sperm cells –Oogenesis - in ovaries / results in egg cells Involves the same stages as mitosis!

2. How many cells result? Complete process requires two cycles (meiosis I and II) 4 new cells are produced –4 viable sperm –1 / 4 egg cells viable

3. What is the mathematical equation for meiosis? 2N → 1N + 1N + 1N + 1N “A diploid cell divides and makes 4 new haploid cells”

4. How do the daughter cells compare to the parent cell? Can be totally different! –New combinations of chromosomes are possible due to crossing over –Parent cells (in gonads) are diploid while gametes are haploid This is part of the reason sexual reproduction results in so much variation amongst offspring!!!
