Blood Vessels
Vascular System Blood circulates inside blood vessels, which form a closed transport system, the vascular system. This idea, that blood circulates, is not even 400 years old - William Harvey, English physicican Greeks believed blood was like a tide
Blood Vessels As heart beats, blood is propelled into the large arteries leaving the heart. (artery=away) Moves into smaller arteries, and then into arterioles, which feed the capillary beds in tissues.
Blood Vessels Capillary beds are drained by venules, which in turn empty into veins. Veins return blood to the venae cavae, the great veins, which enter the heart (SVC / IVC) Capillary beds are where the exchange between tissues and blood occurs.
Anatomy of blood vessels Walls of blood vessels have three layers, or tunics: – Tunica intima - innermost – Tunica media – changes diameter – Tunica externa - outermost
