High-Speed Interconnect Technology Optical fiber hello, everybody. I’m park chang hyun. I introduce Optical fiber and technology application about interconnect 0540642 Park-Chang-Hyun

What is optical fiber? An optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent fiber that acts as a waveguide, or "light pipe," to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber. An optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent fiber that acts as a waveguide, or "light pipe," to transmit light between the two ends of the fiber. it, though used extensively in the modern world, is a fairly simple and old technology. Guiding of light by refraction, the principle that makes fiber optics possible, was first demonstrated by Daniel Colladon and Jacques Babinet in Paris in the early 1840s. But in the 1966, Charles K. Kao and George A. Hockham of the British company Standard Telephones and Cables (STC) were the first to promote the idea that the attenuation in optical fibers could be reduced below 20 decibels per kilometer (dB/km), making fibers a practical communication medium. This discovery developed interconnection and earned Kao the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 first demonstrated by Daniel Colladon and Jacques Babinet in Paris in the early 1840s

Operation Theory Index of refraction Total internal reflection The basis of Optical fiber is refraction.

refraction According to high school physics, refraction is the change in direction of a wave due to a change in its speed.

Total internal reflection But refraction is effected to medium. If lights passed the cable, We missed data or signals. So optical fiber used total internal reflection.

Optical fiber communication Applications Optical fiber communication Optical fiber sensor Optical fiber is used to sensor or communication. The communication part figure is optical and electrical transceiver.

Optical fiber communication In the 4th lecture, we studied the difference of normal cable communication and optical fiber communication. For optical fiber communication, E/O and O/E conversion must be necessary for it. What is E/O and O/E conversion? E/O & O/E Conversion ??

E/O & O/E Conversion This is the example of Electrical to Optical converter. It organization Inputs and outputs for optical fiber and coaxial cable.

Conversion operation According to Electrical-to-optical conversion of OFDM 802.11g/a signals by direct current modulation of semiconductor optical amplifiers, Fig.1 presents the principles of operation of the proposed RoF base station during transmission (a) and reception (b). Optical versions of the RF signals arriving via fiber from the central office to the mobile (downlink) are amplified by the SOA at the base station before photodetection; the photocurrent drives the antenna with the RF downlink signal.

Advantage and Disadvantage More data and faster than coaxial cable. Cheaper and Small space Long life Small noise Hardly to find defects to optical fiber cable. Need E/O conversion

But advantages are much better than disadvantage, optical fiber adapts various fields. Last picture. An optical fiber connection is held up to the transmit module of the 50G Silicon Photonics Link. The link uses passive alignment techniques, wherein the connector mates to pins embedded in the silicon chip to ensure alignment of the laser beam to the optical fiber
