What just happened? ‘As you all know authority remoteness is an obstacle in the accomplishment and appreciation of knowledge sharing. Today you’ll be granted access to this phenomenon through a challenge and other things. Ok, let’s ensure maximum impact and see if we can move the needle on this by means of the propagation of the following actualizations. Great, go ahead!’. Tricks leading to confusion: tempo, limited linking, nominalizations, compounding, unfamiliar / vague terms, no clear instructions….

What should you do as a lecturer? 1. Don’t take things for granted, consider your audience. 2.Use plain English wherever possible. Think about how much you’re going to explain at a time. 3.Think too about pronunciation and the speed of your speech – slow down slightly if necessary – and insert pauses. 4.Consider lecture structure and instructions before the lecture. Explain course structure explicitly. Always check that students have understood your instructions before starting the activity. The question “Do you understand?” is as good as useless, especially with international audiences. CCQs 5.Avoid using the imperative in your instructions. Instead, use request forms – for example “Can you repeat that?”.

Thank you for your participation!
