What is diversity? (Discuss this with your partner.)

DIVERSITY The state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.

What is tolerance? (Discuss this with your partner.)

TOLERANCE The willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own.

SHORT READ ALOUD: “A NEW BEGINNING” The city of New York was originally called New Amsterdam. This Read Aloud selection describes the arrival of a settler in New Amsterdam in the 1600s. Vocabulary: Diversity Tolerance Remember that diversity is variety within a group of people and that people who respect others’ beliefs are showing tolerance.
