Renaissance Art A “re-birth” of classical art in Europe

Renewed Interest in the Classical World  The Roman Catholic Church copied documents that survived from the classical period  Merchants and crusaders brought back goods and ideas from the East such as classical learning that were saved in the Byzantine Empire  Europeans read classical works that the Muslim scholars brought their way  Scholars stared collecting and reading ancient books from monasteries  Artists and architects studied classical statues and buildings.

Rediscovering the Past  Scholars escaped the Byzantine Empire in the 1300s and stole works of literature in their luggage.  Scholars were excited and went looking for more in monasteries.  Scholars wanted to learn the humanities: grammar, speaking, poetry, history and the Greek and Latin languages  Other sources of inspiration were Roman ruins in Italy:  Statues, buildings.  Tried to make their work look like the Greeks and Romans

ACTIVATING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE Just as you figured out from these images, art can tell us a lot more than the content of what is pictured.
