Representative or Steward (definition) Standing or acting for another It is important that representatives realize they speak for everyone, not just themselves

Four Major Roles of Representatives The Worksite Leaders The Communicator The Problem Solver The Union Builder

Role #1 The Worksite Leader Must be a VISIBLE Representative Welcomes new employees and members Represents Blgd/Site members at council meetings

Role #2 The Communicator Distribute newsletters, flyers & other info. Maintain and activate phone tree. Conduct & collect surveys. Inform membership of policies, decisions & benefits of membership.

Role #3 The Problem Solver Files grievances at informal level Represents members in workplace disputes with management Identifies workplace problems Involves members in problem solving

Role #4 The Union Builder Recruit new members Recruit volunteers Develop worksite involvement opportunities Develop union strength

Tips for Effective Listening STOP TALKING!!! Concentrate on what is being said. Ask questions. Get main points.

Tips (continued) Leave emotions (likes and dislikes) outside. React to ideas, not people or personalities. Avoid assumptions. Don’t argue but, be honest.
