Evaluation Q1 In what ways do your media products use develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Magazine: Use

Use In my film magazine and the Empire magazine the masthead is in a bold reds font at the top of magazine with the slug line placed underneath the masthead in a smaller font. Both my own and this issue of Empire have exclusive or special edition copies. I have used the same idea of text at the bottom of the magazine cover and have also related it to horror and have used the layout including the two different colour fonts and the uses of slashes (/) to spilt up the film names.

Magazine: Develop

Develop On my magazine I put the band of red across the cover like the gold band on the Empire magazine rather than using two pictures on each side of the band I used only one to keep the focus on the main cover image. My magazine has the main story cover line underneath the photo much like the Empire magazine and it also uses different fonts, mine uses three fonts rather two used on Empire and the positioning of the cover lines is slightly different as mine is more centred.

Magazine: Challenge

Challenge I have used a medium close up photo rather the full shot used on Empire magazine. I chose to do this as I wanted the audience to be able to see Harriet’s facial expressions and hopefully the will see the link to the trailer/film. My magazine is a horror special whereas Empire is the standard monthly issue. I decided to make it a horror special as I could have more of genre focused style on the magazine through the use of fonts and colours

Poster: Use

I have chosen to also use a blue tint over my poster much like the Case 39 poster as they are both the same genre so it works quite well and shows that it is a horror/thriller genre. I used steel tongs and production logos this a convention of all film posters so this makes my own poster look more realistic.

Poster: Develop

Like the Case 39 poster I put the names of the actors at the top of the poster to draw attention as the actors in the film are important when an audience decided if they want to see the film. In both photos used on the posters they are positioned in corners, however my photo is only of one person

Poster: Challenge

Challenge I have used reviews on my poster which is sometimes used on horror film posters and on trailers I did this as a lot of people like to know how a film is rated before they see it and good reviews are more likely to influence people to see the film. The layout on the Case 39 poster is unusual to other posters as it the steel tongs are not in straight lines for my poster I have stuck to the standard layout seen on posters.

Trailer: Use We used a montage in our trailer this affect is used in a lot of horror film trailer and it creates suspense and atmosphere. We used this affect in the asylum scenes as the tension was building.

Trailer: Develop We used a hospital for some of the locations however it is just the one in the hospital rather than the whole building. This shows the isolation of the character and also her mental state.

Trailer: Challenge We created a brand new logo for our trailer which we also used on the posters. Our narrative was different to other films in our genre as it was shown from the point of view of the villain, however it is unclear if she is the villain.
