Art Masterpiece Arizona By Maxfield Parrish 4 th Grade

Meet the Artist: Maxfield Parrish Born in Philadelphia in He lived to be 96 years old and painted until he was 91 years old! He began drawing very young and he was very good! He illustrated magazine covers and children’s books. Best known for his use of colors – especially “Parrish-Blue” used in his skies. Known as the “Master of Make Believe”

Some of Parrish’s artwork: See how Parrish used colors?

Vocabulary Words Landscape: a painting showing a scene from nature that includes sky, mountains, trees, rivers, fields, etc. Glazing: laying on one transparent color on top of another Mood: the predominant emotion in a piece of artwork that can be achieved by use of light and dark colors

Arizona What type of painting is this? Where do you think this was painted? Is this a rural or an urban landscape and why?

Arizona, 1950 What colors do you see in the painting? Which colors are darkest and lightest? The sky is an example of “ Parrish- Blue ”.

Arizona What mood does this painting create? Does this look real or dream-like to you? This painting is on display at the Phoenix Art Museum!

What we will be doing: Sketch a landscape that tells about where we live. (Add details that are unique to Arizona) Plan your drawing so all of the space is used on your paper! Use your oil pastels to add color to your picture. Try mixing colors and coloring dark and lightly. Be careful because the oil pastels smudge easily! Title your artwork and be sure to sign your paper!
