Questionnaire Design Prepared by: Ali Abdallah Islamic university of Lebanon Economics and Business Adm. MBA – 2015/2016 SPSS

a) Determine the questions to be asked b) Select the question type for each question and specify the wording c) Design the question sequence and overall questionnaire layout Design of the questionnaire can be split in to three elements SPSS

- A key link needs to be established between the research aims and the individual questions via the research issues. Issues and questions can be determined through a combined process of exploring the literature and thinking creatively. Survey aims: to explore the factors that might explain the reasons that Islamic University of Lebanon candidates give for undertaking a MBA program: SPSS

- Questionnaire should has a title. - Date of the version should be printed on the questionnaire. - A brief introductory statement. - Contact and return information should be included on the questionnaire. - Standardize by using as few question types. Decide on a Layout and Sequence SPSS

Question Types - Open vs. Closed - Single vs. Multiple responses - Ranking - Rating SPSS

Open vs. Closed Questions Open question : What do you think are the reasons for football hooliganism? Implies a whole range of replies Make very precise judgment of each individual Closed question :Do you think football hooliganism is caused by: (tick if appropriate) SPSS

IF your questions cannot be categorized until all the replies are returned then ensure that sufficient space is included for the question and leave a space in the margin to code a numeric response. What was the main problem you encountered with your wheelchair? e.g. SPSS

Single Questions - Only one box should be ticked - Tick as many boxes "tick all boxes that apply". Multiple Questions One variable Declaration Three variable Declaration Which of the following means do you use to travel to college? Which is your most usual means of traveling to college? SPSS

Never be tempted to use the following structure You will have problems when summarizing these results Think about this : SPSS

Ranked Responses - Only one box should be ticked Each option should be coded as separate variable (5 variables) SPSS

Rated Responses Each of the four rows will form a separate variable contains numeric code from 1 to 5 SPSS

Some general rules can be stated on question wording: Be concise and unambiguous Avoid double questions Avoid questions involving negatives Ask for precise answers Avoid leading questions Decide on Question Wording SPSS

Be Concise and Unambiguous Make questions brief and clear Bad: "do you believe that the UK should have a bicameral parliament?" Good: "do you believe that the UK should have upper and lower houses of parliament?" Bad: "have you been to the cinema recently" Ambiguity: Concise: Good: "have you been to the cinema in the last two weeks?" Check for ambiguity SPSS

Avoid double questions Make questions brief and clear Bad: Do you think the British should eat less and exercise more? Good: SPSS

Avoid questions involving negatives SPSS

Ask for precise answers Avoid leading questions "Do you agree with the majority of people that the health service is failing?" SPSS

Discussion SPSS
