How to Improve your Listening and Reading Comprehension – Teacher Read-Aloud (Tuning, p 25) lesson 3.2

CCSS: SL.1 & CCSS R.4

Look at this picture for 30 seconds….

On your paper, list everything that you remember from the picture. I will give you 2 minutes.

Raise your hand if you know… What color was the paint? How many children did you see? Was there carpet or wood flooring in the room? Was there a t.v. in the room? Was there a lamp in the picture? Did you see any toys? What color was the couch?

How many did you get right? Did you notice how easy it is to look at something without really paying attention to it? Have you ever had a similar experience with listening or reading?

Has anybody ever gotten mad at you because you weren’t listening? What happened?

How does it feel when someone won't listen to your ideas or opinions?

What are some reasons why people don't listen?

What's wrong with not listening when someone is talking to you?

How can not listening create hard feelings between friends?

Is there a difference between hearing and listening? What is the difference?

To be a good listener… Be respectful. “All Ears!” Nothing in your hands to distract you Stand or sit up straight No fidgeting

ASK questions to find out more. To be a good listener…

NOD, or say something to show you understand. To be a good listener…

REPEAT what you heard in your own words. To be a good listener…

Listen to these sounds…. A B C

What did you hear? A B C

Now try these….Listen closely! A D B E C F

What did you hear? A D B E C F

To be a good listener…we have to LISTEN!

When you are READING, ask yourselves the 5 W’s… 1. Who? 2. What? 3. Where? 4. When? 5. Why?

Let’s practice what we have learned! Before we get started, rate your listening skill level I am going to read an excerpt from a novel to you. Your job is to LISTEN.

Pair/Share 1.What did you notice? 2.How did you feel? 3.What do you wonder? 4.Where did the author take you?

Open Discussion 1.Emotional Response 2.Who can point out a specific word or line that created a strong impression? 3.What is it about Paulsen’s language that makes it so powerful? 4.This piece is a preface to Paulsen’s book The Winter Room. What do you think the author’s purpose was in placing this particular piece right at the front of a novel? And why the title, “Tuning”? Rate yourself once more.
