Workshop #1: Teaching Inquiry Based Science in the Elementary Classroom Topic: Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies Christine Mazza and Edith Schneider June 14th, 2014

Agenda Morning (9 - 12) Welcome and Introductions Tour of the ESC/Talk about Environmental Conservation Introduction to the Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies through inquiry omaking observations and predictions, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. Explore and find supporting video clips on Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies Post findings on shared wiki space. Afternoon (1 – 3) NOVEL - Library (postponed due to weather) Writing Strategies for an inquiry based investigation (If time permits) Reflection

Introductions – 2 Truths and One Lie Name Grade Where you teach Tell your partner two truths and one lie about yourselves. Your partner has to figure out the lie. Your partner will have to introduce you to the group.

Learning Objectives Upon completion of the workshop, you will: Learn the science content – Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies. Conduct an investigation on Healthy minds/bodies. Learn some reading strategies for non-fictional text. Learn some writing strategies for writing.

Overview of 3-workshop series Day 3 Expectations: By day 3 you will have completed the following: Inquiry based lesson Writing Assignment using one of the 14 Writing Strategies or one of your own You will bring the following: Inquiry Based Lesson (4 copies) 3 pieces of student work with names blacked out (4 copies) Writing Rubric (4 copies)

SO, by the end you will produce: Student work that shows evidence of observation, prediction, collection of data and conclusion. A repository of resources that can be used for this topic in the future.
