 What is science? –The observation and knowledge of the world around us  Environmental Science- the study of how humans interact with the environment –relatively new field –Major catalyst- Silent Spring by Rachael Carson (DDT and bald eagles)

Environmental Problems  What are some environmental problems?  Categorized into 3 groups –Resource Depletion –Pollution –Extinction

 Resource Depletion –What are some resources? –What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources  Pollution- introduction of harmful levels of chemicals or waste into the environment  Extinction vs Endangered –What is the difference? –Name some organisms that fall into each category.

Sustainability  The goal of environmental science is sustainability- the ability to keep in existence or maintain –It is the ability for a population to survive indefinitely  How could we do this?
