Simplicity and Solitude Making Space for Priorities

Introduction Simplicity and Solitude are related Solitude seeks simplicity in time and creates space to pursue real priorities Simplicity makes space for what we want to do most importantly

Bible evidence: Solitude and Silence Jesus and simplicity: Mark 1:12, 13; 6: See also Mark 6:31, 32. See also Eccl. 3:7, Ps. 46:10

Benefits: Solitude/Silence 1. Give us rest from defending ourselves with spoken words 2. Allows things suppressed or hidden to surface 3. Create space for God to speak to us 4. Give us mental and physical rest

Hints for solitude 1. Plan ahead for special times/retreats 2. Find a place and/or time in your home that can be solitude 3. Ask God to help you find a way

Bible evidence: Simplicity See Matt. 6:19-34 Note how simplicity is related to trust, faith, and anxiety

Definition: Simplicity 1. Simplicity relates not only to money but also to time, talents, relationships, and priorities 2. Simplicity is not only outward act but inward attitude 3. Relates to our mission and evangelism 4. Anxiety level is a gauge of simplicity

Key attitudes in Simplicity 1.All we possess is a gift from God not something we created 2. All these things are cared for by God 3.What we have is available to others

Current challenges 1. One major challenge is debt— especially credit cards etc. and installment buying 2. All are challenged by computer, internet, and media use. Many are addicted

Conclusion 1. This is a spiritual issue not just an efficiency issue 2. Simplicity and solitude when practiced bring freedom.
