Solve the following problems on a loose leaf piece of paper. 1. You just got your first credit card and you spend $773 on electronics, $296on clothes, and $124on going out to eat. How much money do you own the credit card company? Write this number as a negative integer. 2. You get your first pay check and want to pay down your credit card. You put your whole pay check of $1056 on your credit card account. Do you owe money, yes or no? If yes how much do you owe? Write your final balance as a positive or negative number. 3. If you still owe money, how much do you still owe the credit card company? If you do not owe money, how much do you now have to spend?

Zero Pairs: Quantities that combine to make zero.

Today I will be able to describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

What is a rational number? * A rational number is a real number that can be written as a simple fraction (i.e. as a ratio). * Ex: 5, -10, ½, -3/6, ¼ Rational number or not? √2 -1/

* What is an integer ? * Integers are positive and negative whole numbers. Ex: 15, -32, 94, -146

* What is an Additive Inverse ? * (The additive inverse of a real number is the opposite of that number on the real number line. A number and its additive inverse have a sum of 0.) Ex: the opposite of −3 is 3.

* What is the break even point ? * (The break-even point is the point at which there is neither a profit nor loss.) The outcome or sum is 0.

* What is Absolute Value ? * Absolute value describes the distance of a number on the number line from 0 without considering which direction from zero the number lies. The absolute value of a number is never negative.

What is the sum of the card values shown? Use your number line to answer the following questions. 1.What is the final position on the number line? 2.What is the additive inverse? 3.What combination of cards could also be used to get back to 0?

What is the sum of the card values shown? Use your number line to answer the following questions. 1.What is the final position on the number line? 2.What is the additive inverse? 3.What combination of cards could also be used to get back to 0?

Let’s pratice

Write and answer the following questions on a loose leaf piece of paper. Write your name and block number at the top of the paper. 1. What is the relationship between 7 and -7? How are they the same? 2. How far is 7 from 0 and in which direction? 3. How far is -7 from 0 and in which direction? 4. What does this tell us about the sum of 7 and is additive inverse -7? 5. Do you think this will hold true for the sum of any number and its additive inverse? Why? 6. You go outside to look at the thermometer and it reads -10 degrees. What does this signify? How many degrees will the temperature need to rise in order for the thermometer to read Write a story problem using money that would represent the expression (-200) 8. Using a number line how could you find the sum of (-5) + 6. (Must draw a number line on your paper.) Challenge: The highest elevation in North America is Mt. McKinley, which is 20,320 feet above sea level. The lowest elevation is Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level. What is the distance from the top of Mt. McKinley to the bottom of Death Valley?

Copy the following questions on a loose leaf piece of paper. Answer the questions. Write your name and block number at the top of your paper.
