Tinker v. Des Moines Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District

Tinker v. Des Moines Narrator: It was a dark and stormy night. Just kidding. It was a regular day in 1968 and John and Mary Tinker were getting ready for school. They each put on a black armband on their way out the door because they wanted to protest the Vietnam War. John Tinker: Bye, Mom! Mary Tinker: Bye, Mom! Narrator: Little did they know that they were going to be in big trouble when they got to school.

Tinker v. Des Moines Principal: Good morning, John and Mary. I am sorry, but you are going to have to take those armbands off. They are not allowed at school. John Tinker: But they’re not hurting anyone! Mary Tinker: And we’re allowed to voice our opinions about things anyway! That’s our first amendment right! Narrator: The fight didn’t end there. They were able to take their case all the way to the Supreme Court, and eventually, the Supreme Court ruled in the Tinkers’ favor. They said that as long as it wasn’t a distraction, free speech could be allowed at school.

On Your Armband… Write: “I stand for _____________” (fill in the blank) Use the tape provided to put the armband on.
