Fighting the Root Causes of Hunger: FEAST & Community Foods Organizing at Oregon Food Bank Sharon Thornberry & Spencer Masterson, Oregon Food Bank

VISION: We envision communities across Oregon and SW Washington where citizens are empowered and actively engaged across sectors to attain personal and community food security. Three approaches: Community FEAST RARE Community Food Assessment Partnership Food Systems Networking Oregon Food Bank Community Food Systems

What happens at a ? Stories are shared from the local food system. Themes and solutions from other communities are shared. Local themes and solutions are identified and priorities are set. Work groups are established and Action Plans created. Community driven FEAST outcomes have included: New farmers’ markets Increased SNAP & WIC acceptance Expanded community gardens New donors for food banks Additional Nutrition Education opportunities

About the FEAST model  Help communities move to action in food system.  Organized by a local steering committee and feature local organizations.  Leads to self-determined organizing plan for food systems work in the community.  OFB staff serve as facilitators, but do not direct the outcomes.

What is Your Vision for Your Food System?

Your Vision?  Take a few minutes and brainstorm as many ideas, projects, and images of your ideal food system as you can. From pie-in-the-sky to very concrete.

 Pick your top idea and write it on a sticky note in large letters.  Post on the wall. Your Vision?

Action Plans -Work through FEAST Action Plans in your group: 1.Broad Vision (5 mins) 2.Partners (5 mins) 3.Information Needed (5 mins) 4.Next Steps (5 mins)
