Characteristics of an object / piece of matter that is just specific to it. Characteristic properties for an object / piece of matter never change they are used to identify unknown matter. Hardest known natural material on Earth Conducts heat 5 times that of copper Most transparent natural material Diamonds in the human body will not trigger the immune system.

The temperature at which a liquids heated to turn into vapor. All liquids have a set boiling temperature. This is a characteristic that is specific to that liquid.

The temperature at which a solid melts. Because a solid substance melts at one temperature only, melting point is a characteristic property.

Alter the form of a substance but not its identity. ssets/science/virtual_labs/E03/E03.html

One or more substances combine or break apart to form new substances.

Types of Matter: matter can be classified into two general categories: mixtures and pure substances. The pure substances include elements and compounds.

Consists of two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined. Scientist classify mixtures by how “well-mixed” they are. In mixtures like sea water, the parts have blended so well together they appear to be a sing substance. e/mixture.html

Pure substances that can not be broken down into other substances by any chemical means. Individually or in combination, the elements form every object in the world around you. 63

A pure substance formed from chemical combinations of two or more different elements. Water is an example of a compound. Just as symbols are used to represent elements, formulas are used to represent compounds. ts/science/virtual_labs/PS15/PS15.html
