1950’s Film From here to eternity By Hollie Walsh and Louise Norton

Introduction From Here To Eternity is a 1950’s film which was brought out in Starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra. It has been described as the original Pearl Harbour story. We are going to be conducting research on this film in order to find out if the internet has had an affect on film distribution. We are going to research the following aspects of the film including; budget, box office takings, availability of the film on the internet, DVD releases, reviews, media coverage and advertisements.

Budget The estimated budget of the film budget of the film (according too IMDb) was $1,650,000. However, MovieDiva have stated the estimated budget was $2.5 million dollars, therefore the actual budget is unknown.

Box Office Takings The Gross takings from the film were said to be $30,500,000 (in the USA), they also gained $12,200,000 from rentals (in the USA). The production dates of the movie were March June 1953.

Availability of film on the internet MovieBerry.com allows users to download and watch from here to eternity for a small (varied) fee. These include $1.31 to watch via DIVX or $0.86 to watch on your iPhone or iPod, or you can watch online for $0.45. (Unsure whether this service is legal/illegal) Solar Movie allows you to download the film with no charge making this website illegal. Movie Data Center also allows you to watch films and download them for, again for no charge, it also gives you the opportunity to Stream movies in HD, this website is illegal. You can also access particular scenes from here to eternity on youtube, which isn’t illegal.

DVD Releases From here to eternity was released on DVD in 2002, was able to rent and buy. The DVD is available on: Amazon for £3.97 Price Minister for £3.69 Zavvi for £3.95 On average from here to eternity is available for on average £3.80

Reviews Average star ratings IMDb gives from here to eternity a 4 Star rating, rotten tomatoes have given it a 4.5 star rating which matches the rating given from film 4 again 4.5 Stars. On average the rating for from here to eternity is 4 Stars.

media coverage and advertisements The film was advertised using posters and trailers, the top part of the image shows the advertisement for From Here To Eternity Here is a link to the film trailer of From Here To Eternity =Yup3rl2yK8A =Yup3rl2yK8A

Other factors Another factor that we have found is that a particular scene ‘the beach scene’ reoccurs throughout the majority of advertisements, and the DVD cover, suggesting that this is the most recognizable part of the film, therefore all of the audience will know what is being advertised.

has the internet had an effect on film distribution As a result of the internet not being used for the use of films in that time period (i.e downloading films, watching films online etc) it wouldn’t have had an effect on the film From Here To Eternity. However, if the film was released in this time period there most definitely would be an effect and the film may not have made as much money as it did in 1953.
