Social Media in School When, How and Why to use it

What can I use?  Facebook groups with exam classes (KS4 and 5)  Twitter for you as a teacher or for your department

Twitter – When?  Gill can create a department  As a teacher or as a department  Share information with students and parents  retweet information from relevant sources  Share achievements/milestones etc

Twitter – How?  Register for an account and start tweeting!  No privacy issues  Students ‘follow’ you. You don’t follow them.  Just think about it before you share it!

Facebook – When?  With exam classes  Setting homework  Answering questions  Encouraging them to discuss with one another

Facebook – How?  Use your private account or a teacher account  Set up an open group and get one student to add themselves during a lesson.  You make the group private and they then add others.  Make sure you have another member of staff in the group too.  ‘One strike and you’re out’ policy

Social Media – Why?  They’re always on it! (notifications)  Engaging (news/articles etc)  It’s safer than you think (them and you)  It’s easy  Independent Learners  Opportunity to have a voice  Belong!
