Background RTF’s “Commissioning, Controls, & Sizing” UES measure calls for sizing to a 30°F balance point – This means the heat pump can provide 100% of the house’s heating needs at outdoor temperatures of 30°F and warmer BPA asked the RTF to update the calculator it developed years ago – Main reason: add variable capacity heat pumps Primary purpose of the sizing calculator: – Simplify heat pump heating season sizing as much as possible Detailed capacity curves are not always readily available to installers, utilities, and evaluators AHRI-rated capacities at 47°F are available 3 – HVAC Calculator
Improvements Made to New Calculator 1.Added sizing for variable capacity heat pumps 2.Removed cooling sizing calculations and detailed window input requirements – This simplification was made because the measure savings apply to heating only 3.Re-designed to be a house-specific calculation – Added a “foundation type” input – Added a “stories above grade” input – Removed option to set insulation levels based on home vintage Now component insulation levels are required inputs – Added “infiltration level” input – Added “duct losses” input 4.Heat Pump Capacity Curve Improvements – Single-Speed: Established an average ratio (0.71) based on recent BPA program installations Previously based on one Lennox unit – Variable-speed: Capacity curves are model and size-specific, so calculator handles each model separately New models will need to be manually added to the calculator 5.Output more specific: Minimum required AHRI-rated heating capacity at 47°F – Previously given in nominal tons 6.Added warnings for out-of-range inputs, etc. 4 – HVAC
Review Reviewers so far: – Jim Haberman (BPA) New calculator’s outputs compare well to the old calculator – Bruce Manclark (CleaResult) – Bob Davis (Ecotope, RTF member) We’re looking for more reviewers: – Open Comment Period: Now through December 18, 2015 Send comments or questions to Adam Hadley – or – HVAC Calculator
