MassMass Is a measure of the amount of matter. Mass is the measurement you make using a balance.

Matter Any thing that has mass and takes up space.

Basic building blocks of matter Atom Element Compound

ATOM Is the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.

ELEMENT Is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom. Carbon C Hydrogen H Oxygen O

COMPOUND Is a substance that is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded. Many compounds consist of molecules

PROPERTIES Extensive Properties Intensive Properties

Extensive Properties Depend on the amount of matter that is present. volume, mass, amount of energy

Intensive Properties Do not depend on the amount of matter that is present. Melting point, boiling point, density

Properties Physical Properties: Can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Chemical Properties: It relates to a substance’s ability to undergo changes that transform it in to different substances

Changes Physical change: A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity. Change of state (Liquid, Solid, Gas) Chemical Change: A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances. Reactants and products

Reactants: The substances that react in a chemical change. Products: The substance that are formed by the chemical change.

CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER Matter Mixture

MIXTURE : Is a blend of two or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its own identity and properties. 1- Homogeneous 2- Heterogeneous

Homogeneous They have the same proportion of components through out. Homogeneous mixtures are also called solutions.

Heterogeneous Other mixtures are not uniform throughout, that is, they are heterogeneous. Example: clay and water

PURE SUBSTANCE It has a fixed composition and differs from a mixture in the following ways: 1-Every sample of given pure substance has exactly the same characteristic properties. 2-Every sample of a given pure substance has exactly the same composition
