Classification of Matter

Learning Goal  Today we will determine a solution to be a:  Pure substance  Homogeneous mixture  Heterogeneous mixture

My Kool-aid vs your Kool-aid

Classification of Matter  The composition of a pure substance is the same throughout and does not vary sample to sample. It can be an element or a compound.  Mixtures contain more than one substance and vary in composition and properties from sample to sample.

 Mixture is a blend of 2 or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its own identity and properties.  Parts are mixed physically and usually be separated.  Ex: salt water vs saline (5% Na)  Homogeneous- uniform in composition and contain same proportions of components throughout  Heterogeneous- not uniform throughout  Filtration or vaporization can be used to separate mixtures

Pure Substances  A pure substance has a fixed composition and differs from a mixture in the following ways:  Every sample has exactly the same characteristic properties.  Every sample has exactly he same composition.  Pure substances are either compounds or elements  A compound can be broken down into more simpler compounds or elements by a chemical change.  Example: Glucose is made of C, H, O

Practice  There are 10 substances set up in stations around the room.  In groups you will determine the substance to be:  Pure substance  Homogeneous mixture  Heterogeneous mixture  We will rotate every minute 1 minute

Groups 1. Sabrina, Ajia, Justin 2. Kaitlyn, Trinity, Gerald 3. Hector P., Shania, Caylee 4. Alyssa, Ethan, Coran 5. Jorge, Syriah, Chris S 6. Chris V, Ivan, Heidi 7. Laniecesha, Yasmine

Your Assignment  Vocabulary Squares:  1. Pure substance  2. Homogeneous mixture  3. Hetrogeneous mixture
