Presentation transcript:

Founded in 2005 Our mission is to provide basic furniture, home and baby goods to those in need in the Merrimack Valley in order to facilitate their permanent sustainability while improving our environment by reducing waste in landfills. Why? Because it costs less tax dollars to house people than to run homeless shelters, but without furniture, clothing and support they fail.

A Goods Bank: 13,000 sq ft Warehouse Like a food bank but for goods Take in large truckloads of goods Distribute to people social service agencies or individuals

We give $ 1million in value of free goods to 25,000 people/year Appliances Clothing Furniture Baby gear and cribs Bedding Books Computers Cleaning supplies Electronics Home goods Rugs Sheets and towels Toiletries (No toys or sporting gear)

Save City of Lowell ~1% of tipping fees by reusing 165,639 cu ft of goods x 7 lbs/cu ft= 1,159,477 lbs 1,159,477 lbs/2,000 lbs/ton = 580 tons 580 tons x $120 tipping fee = $69,600 saved 40% more than ‘08!

Hotels and universities have to replace mattresses every few years Cost of trashing one lot of 240 mattresses : Ex: 240 full sized mattress sets for typical hotel remodel 560 pieces x $25/piece to recycle = $14,000 Or they dispose in dumpster: ~$5,000 disposal fees Value of saving them Trucking to us is only $750 for 3 loads 3 truckloads = 240 mattress sets back into reuse saved clients if they had to buy mattresses $90/recycled full matt x 240 = $21,600 saved ! Most would go without, rent or pay full price and end up back homeless again We provide ~ 400 kids with mattresses/year that were sleeping on the floor.

Every wish means 5 wishes are granted Child in need gets a bed Social workers can get back to doing jobs Donors find a home for unwanted goods City saves on disposal Family succeeds in staying housed the first time which has long term effects

For every wish… There is a couch or lamp in an attic that needs a home!

Furniture banks are cost efficient For every $1 budget, we deliver $4 in value of goods out Furniture banks save on average 1% of city’s bulky waste We provide $1million + in value of goods Save businesses $$$ in waste fees 850 families/year stay housed for good the first time

Saving the Planet while helping to end homelessness forever Put home goods back into their original use - in homes!
