Solving Nonlinear Systems Section 3.5 beginning on page 132
What’s New We have already learned how to solve linear systems using substitution and elimination. In this section we will be applying those skills to systems involving at least on quadratic equation, or one equation of a circle. We will also be continuing to utilize the techniques we have learned to solve quadratic equations (square roots, factoring, the quadratic formula).
What Does This Look Like?
Solving By Graphing The points of intersection are the solutions.
Substitution ** Choose the best variable to get alone. **Substitute into the OTHER equation and simplify. **Choose an appropriate method to solve the equation **plug these values into one of the equations to find the y values for each coordinate pair
Elimination If there are already opposites, just add the equations. Choose an appropriate method to solve. No Solutions
Substitution –The Circle Example 4: Solve the system by substitution
